The M980 pedals boast a four-fold increase in pedal-to-shoe contact over Shimano's earlier M970 pedal, providing more stability for greater control. The M980's pedal height has also been reduced, eliminating 2.2mm of stack height for greater clearance and increased power transfer. Additionally, the pedal body of the M980 encases more of the axle spindle, making the system stiffer thanks to the added overlap and wider bearing placement.
